The Position

A Police Sergeant, within the Marysville Police Department, has direct supervisory responsibilities over police officers and other non-sworn personnel; and is provided limited administrative direction by the Operations Lieutenant and the Support Services Lieutenant or Deputy Chief of Police. It is anticipated that the incumbent chosen for the position will be initially assigned to the Operations Division as a Patrol Sergeant.

Patrol Sergeants report directly to the Operations Lieutenant and perform a variety of operational, supervisory, and professional work in support of, and in conjunction with the department’s administrative staff. Department Police Sergeants are given direct functional responsibilities over various bureaus and programs within the department. The Police Sergeant will have the opportunity to work with other members of the department to continue to enhance the Department’s focus on community oriented policing; and will take a key role in developing the department’s next generation of leaders.

The Ideal Candidate

The City of Marysville is seeking a passionate, energetic individual with strong communication skills to assume the role of Police Sergeant. The ideal candidate will understand policing principles, practices, and techniques within contemporary municipal law enforcement agencies. The Police Sergeant should be familiar with patrol operations, investigations, and ancillary duties associated with to police supervisory positions.

The new Police Sergeant must be open, honest, and have a strong understanding of the principles of leadership. The Police Sergeant will be expected to serve as an example amongst colleagues and subordinates alike, and to promote teamwork within the Department. A candidate with the desire and ability to develop personnel, and establish positive relationships within the Department, the community, and allied agencies will be valued.

It is highly desirable that the candidate have a strong working knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and procedures associated with community oriented policing, media relations, risk management, and employee supervision.

Candidates must possess three (3) years of responsible work experience as a sworn law enforcement officer and a California POST Basic Certificate. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Police Administration, Police Science, or other related field and possession of a California POST Intermediate, Advanced, and/or Supervisory certificate is highly desirable.
